LANTITE – What ACER says …

ACER, who are responsible for producing and running the LANTITE tests, say that ‘The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students is designed to assess initial teacher education students’ personal literacy and numeracy skills, to ensure teachers are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching’. The tests are run online and can therefore only assess personal literacy and numeracy skills that can be measured through an online assessment tool.

All students enrolled in an initial teacher education course (either undergraduate or postgraduate) will be expected to sit and pass the test prior to graduation. Some higher education providers may demand you sit the test as part of their course entry requirements. You need to contact your higher education provider and the teacher regulation authority in your state or territory to confirm their exact requirements.

In terms of your preparation, it is interesting that ACER states, ‘The test has been designed to reflect the contexts in which aspiring teachers are likely to exercise personal literacy and numeracy: personal and community, schools and teaching, and further education and professional learning.’

English tutor in Oz tip – When you are preparing for the tests, it is important that you familiarise yourself with these contexts, because the bulk of the LANTITE questions will be based upon them.

There are two types of questions – selected response (for example, multiple-choice) or short answer.  ACER recommended that you work steadily through the test. without spending too much time on any one question.

If you think you know the answer to a question, answer it, even if you are not certain. Marks are not deducted for incorrect responses.  If you are not confident in your response, make a note of the question number and return to it later if you have time.

If you do not answer a question, the question number will not be shaded in the navigation bar at the top of the page. By using the navigation bar, the question will be easy to find and return to later if you have time.

For literacy, the test has one section (65 questions). The available time is 120 minutes.

In general, I begin all LANTITE tuition with an initial consultation, after which we make a plan together. This involves focused learning sessions (conducted in consultation with me online) and informal practice (recommended and monitored by me, but completed independently by the student).
